Friday Confessionals
I CONFESS...I don't ever add vegetables to dinner unless it's already in the recipe. I don't have a side of green beans, or corn...just about EVER! Although David and I are not veggie lovers, somehow our girls actually love them.
I CONFESS...I am really obsessive compulsive when it comes to toys. I never had a problem until I had kids. At my worst I would count toys and if one was missing we all had to look until we found it. I even made David count toys. He had to know how many characters came with each Little People set, trains we had, etc. I have gotten over my counting for the most part, but it doesn't mean I don't have the urge to do it. I simply resist for fear of making my children compulsive. I had to wean myself off of counting toys by counting only after the girls went to bed, to not counting at all now. (Ok, I count about once a month)
I CONFESS...I absolutely HATE HATE HATE reading! I seriously can't stand it. It's not that I can't read, I just don't enjoy it. I am actually a very good reader. David can't stand this quality about me. The thing that bugs him the most is that I will read about 200 pages in 2 days and then just stop reading, never to pick the book up again. I just get bored. I did this with the Green Mile and he will NOT let me live it down. He can't understand how I can get to a really climatic point in a book and not go back to find out what happens. He said I couldn't watch the movie until I finished the book. After months, he finally realized I wasn't going to finish so he let me watch the movie. The only things I find some enjoyment in reading are: true stories, church books, and self help books. Although I hate reading, I read every night to my girls and have made it my goal to instill a love of reading in them. So far it has worked great! Both of my girls LOVE books and will sit still while I read to them. (Those who know how energetic my girls are know how unusual this is)
I CONFESS...I hate wearing socks and shoes. I can't stand how confined my feet feel in shoes. Plus, it just makes my feet hot. I am a flip flop lover! I wear flip flops in any weather, all year round. The only time I wear shoes is if I am exercising at a gym (Because it's required), and when I'm pregnant and its snowy. I have lots of shoes and lots of flip flops, but I go for flip flops every time. I don't know why I even bother buying shoes, but I do occasionally wear them and I can't pass up buying a cute pair of shoes. I also can only buy shoes that are comfortable. I don't understand shoving your foot into a cute pair of shoes that has you dying because your feet hurt. It just doesn't make any sense to me.
These are a few of my confessions....I have TONS of them so I will post every Friday.

Spring!
Little Chef's job was to put all the sprinkles on the cookies. She actually did a really good job!
Our "Spring" Cookies!
What's a party without goodie bags? I grabbed things from around the house that we have been buying for when the weather gets nice and shoved it in the Tinkerbell slingbags that we got when we went to Disneyland and never gave to the girls. I even found 2 goodie bags from last Easter laying in my basement that went in.
Shelby started teaching herself how to pump on the swing set. It shocked the heck out of us because Kadence won't even sit on a swing so we have no idea how she figured it out. Kadence doesn't like how unstable it makes her. Shelby kept falling off backwards and having the swing hit her. Kadence would yell, "Shelby fell on her head, but she's ok!" It was really funny.
It was fun to see the girls pull the "petals" off their flower roll.

Another Truth...
It turned out to be a nice recovery. Shelby earned herself a Sally (From Nightmare Before Christmas) doll for going potty. (Kadence got one too) They then decided they would rather watch Nightmare Before Christmas instead of the rented movie. All together our family movie night was $6! Sadly I don't always realize that my kids are missing out until they are already in bed. I feel terrible that I let my mood interfere with my children's enjoyment. I guess it's something else I can add to my list of things to improve upon.
Potty Time!
I am now going to try to make a chart that encourages her to have fewer accidents. I am going to try to give her a prize if she only has 2 accidents in a day....then once she gets the hang of that I will bring it to 1...then zero. Hopefully it will work, but we'll see. She has surprised me throughout the whole process because she hasn't fought me at all. She has such a stubborn personality and I didn't know if she would fight me on it. I'm so proud of Shelby and so happy she has such a good big sister cheering her on. I don't know how many times I have heard Kadence say, "I'm so proud of Shelby, she's a big girl now!" I'm lucky to have two girls who love each other so much.

"Disneyland on Skates"
I tried to get a family picture, but since we had already given the girls their sno cone cups, it was VERY difficult to get them to look at the camera.
Kylah couldn't wait to get to her seat before starting in on her sno cone!
Getting a cup was something that I always did when I was younger. My mom used to take me to Disney On Ice in April for an early birthday present. (My birthday is in May) I always got a cup to remember the trip and I still have them downstairs in a box. I told David this at our first Disney On Ice and he was indifferent to the idea. Once we got there and saw the girls faces he knew it would be a tradition for us as well. We all have a Cinderella mug. David, Kadence and I have a Stitch mug and Shelby chose a Flounder mug. This time everyone got Mickey except for Kadence. Its a fun little tradition to pass down. Not only do we get mugs, but now if you pay a few dollars more you get a cool fancy straw. We now have Cinderella straws, Mickey straws, and Stitch straws too. Two Videos
Ok, so there are two videos that I had to get because I didn't want to forget the way each girl said things. The first is of Kadence. She learned a poem in preschool and would tell it to us:
I made myself a snowball
As perfect as could be
I decided to keep it as a pet
And let it sleep with me
I made it some pajamas
And a pillow for it's head
But then last night, it ran away
But first I wet the bed.
The reason it's so funny is because of the last line. It's supposed to be but first IT wet the bed, not I wet the bed. It would make me laugh everytime. She started correcting it...as you will see in the video so I wanted to catch her on video saying it the wrong way.
On Dr. Seuss's birthday we didn't do much, but I did have Shelby wear her One Fish, Two Fish shoes and Kadence wore a Dr. Seuss shirt that I found on clearance at Target. I was trying to get the girls excited about it because we read the books often and they did get pretty excited. Shelby was trying to tell me that she had her Dr. Seuss shoes on and it came out, "Dr. Seuss Sues" It made me laugh so hard (After I finally figured out what she was trying to tell me) Don't mind the cabinet in the background, it usually goes in the kitchen but this was in the middle of our floor project.

Kadence's Casting
This casting was extremely stressful. We had to take her last cast off because she started smelling really bad. I didn't want her to be the stinky kid in class so we brought her in to have it removed on a Friday and they were going to reapply one on the following Tuesday. Unfortunately the reason she was smelly was because she had a nasty infected sore and we were smelling the infection. Luckily for her, and for my peace of mind, it didn't hurt her. We had to learn wound care and couldn't cast until the wound was completely healed. When we got the wound healed, about 12 days later, she broke out in a nasty rash. It looked so painful! She was bothered a little by it and would ask me to put lotion on it so it wouldn't itch. Since I wasn't sure if the rash was a reaction I didn't dare put lotion on it. (And Shriners doesn't like when you use ANYTHING on the skin) The rash finally cleared up and we had our casting date scheduled for February 17th. Since the 17th would mean she was out of a cast for over a month we were hoping for a cancellation. Her care coordinator put us on a 'short notice' list so that we could take the spot of anyone who cancelled. We received a call saying that we could take someones spot on the 10th....GREAT NEWS! We started getting mentally prepared for the day at the hospital and started preparing Kadence for her new cast. On the 8th she got a fever. REALLY?! We got in contact with one of the Dr's and they said that since she didn't have any other symptoms we wouldn't cancel quite yet but warned us that they have taken kids who didn't seem sick into the OR and had things go really bad. We definitely didn't want that, but the longer Kadence is out of a cast the worse her back gets. She regresses so quickly and it even amazes the Dr's how slumped she gets so quick. She woke up the 9th fever free and symptom free. The Dr felt it was ok to go ahead as planned and cast. We also found out that we would need to arrive at the hospital at 6am. Mornings are NOT my thing, and I was dreading getting up so early on such a long day. It's all put into perspective when I think of those who drive from California or fly in from the East Coast. I only have to drive an hour...I'm one of the lucky ones!
We arrived and Kadence was in a great mood! She was the first on the schedule which was nice because it meant we didn't have to try to entertain her for very long. When we got to the room she got on her red gown and then immediately ran to the window and said, "You can see the whole city from here mom!!" It's so amazing to me how positive she always is. I think I can take a lesson from her for sure. She went back to the OR without any hesitation. The DR told us that when she got back there she got so excited because there was a "BIG TV!" Everything went great while she was back. Since she had a pressure sore the last time they tried to be extra careful this time. They put extra padding in the cast and are pushing a little bit further up than usual.
We had mentioned to the Dr just as a joke that Kadence is lighter than her little sister and he asked what we meant. I told him that I think she's been 30 pounds for a year. He was concerned and referred us to the nutritionist. He said it is not normal to go a year without gaining any weight at all. He also said that it will help them if she has a little more meat to her. The nutritionist didn't seem as concerned and said that she sounds very active and is probably just burning all the calories she intakes. Anyone who has seen Kadence knows that she is rarely still. She is always running, jumping, spinning, etc. She gave us some tips to beef her up. We have to add fat to meals when we can. (For example: Add a Tbls of Olive Oil to her spaghetti.) We talked to the Dr later and he said that he is still very concerned because Kadence grew in height but not in weight which means that she actually lost weight. So we'll be working on getting her to gain. My family is tiny so part of it is genetics. My niece has had problems with gaining weight as well.
Kadence picked a red cast and was so excited to show her Teacher Jill and her friends at preschool. Although she loves the color, she is not loving having a cast this time. She hasn't really gone from nothing to a cast. She usually goes from cast to cast or brace to cast, but this time she had a month to wiggle and move 24/7 which she hasn't done for over 2 years. She has had a much harder time adjusting this time and will randomly breakdown crying. She told me one morning, "Mommy I just can't bend in this thing." Nearly broke my heart! Last night when she stood up she looked at me with teary eyes and said, "Mom it just hurts my hips." I am struggling seeing how hard it is for her. She tries so hard to be brave and she's always so happy. The other day (before her casting) she was sitting on the couch and randomly said, "Owies don't hurt mom." I told her that they do sometimes. (That's why they are called an owie after all) She said, "No mom they don't hurt me." She is such a strong girl and is by far stronger than I am in every way, spiritually, physically and mentally.
She was molded for her brace because she will be put in a brace in May. We went down to orthotics and picked out her brace design. She picked blue and purple stars with....RED straps. The orthotics guy tried to talk her into purple so it would match, but it was a no go. Red it is much to my delight...NOT! They are seriously fire engine red! Oh well, whatever makes it easier for her.
As we were signing the discharge papers, the recreational therapy lady came and took Kadence to go decorate cookies. Kadence sat down and put the knife in the frosting and then licked the knife. The therapist told her maybe we'll get a new knife. Kadence grabbed the new knife, dipped in in frosting and licked it again! Then she looked at the therapist and said, "I think I've had enough now. I don't want to get a tummy ache." She cracks me up and the therapist can't get enough of her!
We were a little disappointed to find out that her curve is at 53 degrees in cast. After looking at the xray it looks better than last time even though it was the same degree of curve, so that's a positive thing. The Dr wants to do an xray in traction next office visit to determine where she is at with her flexibility of her spine. It's just a fancy xray where they bend her to see where they can expect to get her down to. Originally we were hoping for low 40's but he thinks her spine has lost quite a bit of flexibility. She has been as low as 38 degrees in cast and the last 4 casts haven't gotten her lower than 46. It's discouraging, but I have to remind myself that 53 is much better than 78. I'll keep everyone posted (Or try to) as we get her new brace and take the new xrays.
